CHAMPION CHATTER May/June Edition

To our residents celebrating a May/June Birthday

“Hope all your birthday wishes come true.”
HAPPPY BIRTHDAY

Nelly & Jack Lot 161
Nelly & Jack joined the Village over the last few weeks after long careers in the building industry for Jack and the legal/medical sector for
Nelly. The Village appealed to both Nelly & Jack with its lovely community feel, lock and leave approach and a central location to their 3 children and 3 grandchildren who are spread across the metropolitan area.

Nelly & Jack are interested in caravan travelling. Most recently here in Western Australia, but now that they are settled into the Village they are keen to expand their travels. Jack has interests in Lego Technic having created a number of stunning pieces. Nelly is a keen photographer and this interest is shared with Jack. Nelly & Jack are looking forward to exploring different activities in the Village now that they have settled into their new house.

Jean & Ken Lot 156
Jean & Ken arrived in Australia from England in 1974 and have always been inPerth. They have 2 sons and 6 grandsons from their 60 year marriage. Jean had a career in medical administration, but retired in 2014. Prior to his retirement in 2009, Ken had a career in painting and building, including teaching apprentices.
Ken is looking forward to being involved in the Hobby Shed, especially after his involvement with the Gosnells Men’s Shed. Jean continues to pursue her interests in Folk Art and gardening, and is looking forward to establishing her own garden here in the Village as well as the Community Garden and Herb Garden.

Both Jean and Ken are keen to be involved in the social activities in the Village,
as well as helping out where needed. Their furry companion Toby is eager to
meet new friends in the Village as well.

Paul Lot 22
Paul joined the Village several months ago after living in Armadale for a few years. Prior to that Paul had spent most of his life in the South West of WA especially in and around Manjimup. Paul worked in the timber industry starting at Gandy Timbers then Bunnings. He spent 41 yrs in the local Fire and Rescue and also coached many childrens sports.

With 2 children and 13 grandchildren all based in the metropolitan area, the Village has meant he is closer to some of his family in Byford and has a better support network. The Village appeals to Paul and once he has more time to settle then he will be exploring more of the social activities the Village has to offer.

HARMONY DAY
Harmony Day occurred on March 21. A few residents came together for the first inaugural Village Harmony Day lunch. There was a great spread of food from around the world, and one very
special Australia lamington cake prepared by Myrna.

POP UP CHOCOLATE SHOP
Just in time for Easter, a pop up chocolate shop was held in the Lodge on 28 March. It proved to be a very social event with many taking the chance to stop for a cuppa, as well as do some shopping for Easter. hanks to the Fremantle Chocolate and Margaret River Fudge Factory for putting the pop up shop together.

LEGAL INFORMATION SESSION
Over 40 residents attended a great session on Wills, Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Power of Guardianship. The session was delivered by the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre. Feedback was very positive and requests have been received to conduct another information session in the future.

PICNIC IN THE PARK
Easter Monday saw a large gathering of residents, family & friends enjoying the lovely weather outside the Lodge. Participants brought along their own picnic to enjoy conversation and company over the Easter weekend. There were several lucky raffle winners on the day.

ANZAC DAY
There was lots of activity around the Village on ANZAC Day. Around 50 residents attended the Dawn Service and Flag raising. Thanks to John & Fay for getting us organised at such an early hour. A coffee van attended just after 6am which was a welcome sight on such a chilly morning.

Around 100 residents attended the Residents ANZAC Day Breakfast. Thanks to the Breakfast Crew for all their efforts on the Day. $200 was raised for Legacy.

CHAMPION CHATTER March/April Edition

To our residents celebrating a March/April Birthday
May the joy that you have spread in the past come
back to you on this day

To the Champion Community

Deb & Rob, Lot 163
After a life-long romance here in Western Australia, and many years
working across a variety of jobs, Deb & Rob have decided to call the
Village home.
Deb has worked a variety of jobs in retail, a furniture removal business,
being a stay-at-home mum, and 29 years with FAL (MetCash). Whilst
Rob has done a range of things including making ceilings, concrete
curbing and driving a concrete truck. A quieter approach to life, after so
many years working will be an interesting change for them both.
Deb & Rob are looking forward to the security, and the lock and leave
approach that the Village offers, so that they can continue their interests
in travelling.
The convenient location of the Village means that they can easily spend
time with their extended family including their two daughters and four
grandchildren. The Village gym and pool are also going to get some use
whilst they are here. Deb has her eye on the Line Dancing in particular.

Robin & Stephen, Lot 174
Robin and Stephen both grew up in Leeton NSW and have been together for 49 years. They have decided to
make the Village their home. Whilst waiting for their house in the Village to be completed, they enjoyed a number
of months living in their caravan. Which was great in getting them used to the downsizing. Robin & Stephen
intend to continue their travelling, in between both of their jobs.
They have three daughters and six grandchildren, all of whom live in
and around Perth.
Stephen enjoys fishing and is looking forward to a few games of pool
in the Village. Robin really enjoys reading, craft and is keen to be
involved in the Art group. Robin and Stephen are both looking forward
to the social aspects of the Village.

Ron & Trish, Lot 167
Ron & Trish joined the Village just before Christmas and will be
celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary in March. They have
been enjoying retirement for several years now and have
travelled between New Zealand and Australia over many years
to keep up with their two children, 5 grandchildren and soon to
be great grandchild.
The Village provides them with safety and security, as well as
close proximity to family here in Western Australia. Though
both Ron & Trish were born and raised in New Zealand they
love Western Australia, especially as it means avoiding the
really cold weather in the South Island of New Zealand.
After working for many years as a facility and building manager
across several businesses Ron is looking forward to the social
aspects in the Village. Whilst Trishs’ work in the accounting
field proved rewarding, she is also looking forward to what the
Village has to offer.

Judy, Lot 164
Originally from Dunedin in New Zealand, Judy moved to Perth in 1987.
She has 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
Her 50 years of nursing and work in mental health means she has
recently started her well deserved retirement. She chose the Village
due to the wonderful community atmosphere.
After many years of enjoyable travel with her late husband Eric, the
spark for travel is well alight. Judy intends to continue travelling and to
also keep physically active. Judy’s next big travel adventure is a back
roads tour of England.
Judy is already enjoying several activities around the Village including
line dancing, bowling, and the pool. She wants to get involved in card
games and needlecraft as well. Judy is so busy with activities in and
out of the Village, it is surprising how she finds time to kayak with her
friend Verna (also in the Village).

Janet, Lot 61
Though originally from the UK, Janet has been in Western
Australia for close to 50 years. She has decided to make the
Village her home together with Pebbles her rescued staffy/
cattle dog cross.
Janet has had a varied working life which has included
nursing, cooking, accounting and clerical liaison. Though she
is currently working part time for the Armadale Hospital she is
intending to start winding down and enjoying retirement in a
couple of years.
As an avid reader, Janet is looking forward to joining the
Village Book Club, and also meeting up with the Village Art
Group to pursue her interest in Art. Together with her
grandchildren, Janet has been enjoying the pool here in the
Village.
Janet loves the peacefulness, safety and security of the
Village, and has really appreciated the support from
Management and the welcome and assistance from fellow
residents.

Jo & Olaf, Lot 128
Jo & Olaf joined the Village late in 2024. They took the opportunity to join their
wonderful former neighbours and friends of 20 years “Windmill” Dave and Judy who are already in the Village and live on the same street.
Olaf was born in Germany and immigrated to Australia in 1988 whilst Jo was
born in New South Wales. Life has been busy for Olaf (a qualified chef) who
formerly worked as a Senior Inspector at Border Security at Perth Airport.
Whilst Jo is still working part time as an Administrator at Bloom Real Estate.
She also has an extensive para-legal background across many Perth law
firms.
Jo and Olaf have 3 children and one grandchild between them. They are currently taking care of their daughter’s cat Zazz. Life in the Village will give Jo
the opportunity to continue her interests in crochet, reading books, and playing Bush Rummy. Whilst Olaf (an award-winning artist) is looking forward to
creating more works of art in his in-house studio space. Now that they are
more settled they are also looking forward to taking short breaks away and rediscovering WA, Tasmania and New Zealand.
Jo & Olaf are very grateful to the wonderful team of Leah & Tia who looked after them and kept them informed and updated during the stressful time of
downsizing and moving into the Village.

Australia Day Breakfast
Close to 90 residents attended the Australia
Day Breakfast. Thanks to all the Breakfast
Crew for their efforts.

Village Get Togethers Outside of the Village
Given works planned for the Lodge renovations, the Village
decided to have a get together off site at the Byford and
Districts Country Club on Thursday 13 February. Around
30 residents attended.
The regular Friday Sundowner group went for an evening
out at the Tang Palace Chinese Restaurant in Maddington
on Friday 21 February. If you haven’t been for a few years,
you may notice some renovations inside the restaurant.

Myrna’s 90th Birthday
Myrna, from Lot 51 celebrated a 90th birthday. Family and friends joined Myrna with a surprise “mob” of Motorcycles and
took her for a ride! Congratulations & best wishes Myrna.

Lodge Extension & Renovations
The much anticipated Lodge extension and renovations are getting closer. Over the last few weeks
some preliminary work has been undertaken including: renovation of the skylight, internal painting of
doors in the main Lodge area, construction of a new storage shed, demolition of the back storeroom to
make way for the extension, and the replacement of the old evaporative air conditioner with something
more modern and efficient.

Items on sale from the market stalls included: art, plants, jewellery, Christmas decorations, ornaments, jams and preserves.

Around 30 residents travelled by Bus to the Moore River area on 3rd December. They stopped for morning tea on the way to Guilderton for a lovely lunch at Seabird. Unfortunately the intended boat trip on the Moore River had to be cancelled due to fire emergency in a nearby area. It was still an enjoyable day though seeing other sites, and getting to know fellow residents.

Food Drive 2024

In the spirit of giving during the festive season, the Village establsi to a Food Drive for the first time. The charity of choice was Starick House, which provides support for those involved in domestic violence situations A huge amount of non-perishable food was generously donated by residents. As a result 7 large baskets/bags were donated to Starick House who were very pleased to receive the timely donations.

Santa made several visits to the Village, touring around in the specially equipped Santa Buggy/Sleigh. He distributed lollies as he went. He made a special appearance at the Sausage Sizzle for the switching on of the Lodge Christmas lights.

Other events and special activities over November/ December

Management put on music for a get together/Sundowner on 21 December. Cathy and Eddie hosted a Christmas Orphans Lunch on 25 December. A Christmas Night Sundowner occurred at the Lodge on
25 December. A couple of streets had their own Christmas events in the lead up to Christmas.

Christmas Lights.

The focus on Christmas Lights in 2024 was bigger than ever. A team of residents setup a magnificent light display in and around the Lodge, and a large number of residents got into the swing of things by decorating and lighting up their homes for Christmas and New Year. The Lodge lights were officially switched on 30 November with a Sausage Sizzle that included family and friends. There was
even a special visit by Santa in his buggy inspired sleigh. Kath and Janice accompanied residents around the Village on walking tours for the lights over several weeks. This gave residents the chance to see what was on offer in relation to lights and decorations and to provide some motivation and inspiration. There was a Village Christmas Lights competition. Judging by an outside representative occurred on 11 December. Residents also had the chance to vote for the Village Choice Awards. All prizes were awarded
on 14 December. Congratulations to the Winners. Both the Villagers Choice Award and Overall Winner went to Alfie and Debra Hudson (Lot 13). Honourable mentions to Ron, Denise and Leanne.

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION COMMUNITY

Lot 68 – Jill Gordon

A recent resident to join us is Jill in Lot 24 temporarily awaiting her new home to be ready in Calm Drive at Lot 68. Her little King Charles spaniel, Phoebe who accompanies her is six and half years old and getting used to meeting lots of new four-legged friends.

Jill grew up in Bassendean with 2 brothers. She moved to Duncraig after she was married where she had one son who is now 39 years old. Jill’s husband worked as a truck salesman for many years with Isuzu trucks. Jill worked for the City of Joondalup for over 18 years at the Leisure Centre doing the reception, memberships etc. This fitted in well when her son was growing up as she was able to pick him up from school and he was able to take part in many of the activities at the centre and so made many friends

After the passing of her husband, she moved to Ellenbrook about 12 years ago where her son lived. Her son subsequently moved to Seville Grove so eventually she sold her house in Ellenbrook to move into the Village and be closer to him and his family. She has a 7-year granddaughter who is involved in swimming, dancing and cheerleading and Jill enjoys going along and watching and supporting her. Jill also enjoys doing Prime Movers and will perhaps pursue this in the local area once she is more settled and maybe join our line dancing group too. She was an avid member of a book club in Ellenbrook and perhaps it is an interest that we could include in our activities here…..

She has travelled extensively in recent years with family and friends travelling to Europe including a River Cruise as well as tours to Canada which she loved. Visiting her brothers in Denmark and Australind and travelling within these areas in WA when time permits are high on her agenda.

Jill loves walking around the village and goes to the village dog park with Phoebe who is very friendly and enjoys meeting so many new friends. Phoebe has never had so many doggy friends!! We hope Jill will be able to settle into her new home soon and she is looking forward to setting up her garden and home!! Welcome to the Village and we look forward to seeing you at some of our activities when you can do so.

Lot 68 – Liam and Val

We welcome Liam and Val to the Village. They have moved into Lot 30 or 13 Delight Way. They both came from Dublin, Ireland over 50 years ago.

They are cousins of Les in Unit 8, but we won’t hold that against them!! They came to Perth in 1966 and thought they would never get here as they had about 7 stops on the way over!! They finally arrived and stayed with Les’ parents until they got settled. The families have always grown up together and they have had lots of interactions and laughs. I am sure that interaction will continue and we may be hearing plenty of Irish jokes!!

They lived in several areas South of the River including Gosnells, Thornlie and others, lastly coming here from Baldivis.

They have 3 children, their oldest son teaches at the University in Canberra, a daughter in business and sales and the youngest son teaches at Koby College in Rockingham. They now have 6 grandchildren who are spread around from Canberra, Melbourne, England and WA. They have very good interaction with them all whenever possible with a granddaughter even coming over from Sydney to help them move into the Village.

Liam used to work as a painting contractor and was never out of work. Val worked in a retirement village in Booragoon as a career. Val has also had an interest in interior decoration and has been able to do that in several homes and is enjoying choosing and organising herself here.

Liam has loved singing and amateur dramatics for many years though he says his voice is not as good now but maybe we’ll get to hear him at our karaoke nights?? He is also interested in gardening and we hope he will join us in the community garden in the very future.

Liam and Val have travelled to many countries including USA , England, Europe and of course Ireland many times but are now more hesitant in travelling with concerns for safety and the world issues impinging on these activities.

VILLAGE MANAGEMENT UPDATE

Thank you to Fiona, Ben, Les & Hector for holding the fort while we enjoyed the sunshine in Exmouth with Chris and Ray (Lot 48) and John and Yvonne (Lot 15). With a lovely sun set sail complements of Ningaloo discoveries owner Mathew (John and Yvonne’s son), our holiday was one to remember.

The final house in Stage 1 is now complete which means residents will no longer have trades and building materials to contend with, yippee! Thank you, Stage 2 residents, for your patience and understanding with multiple new builds still underway.

Our final road in Stage 2 is now complete with 8 out of the 14 new lots starting construction in September and October as the finer weather arrives!

With our Library continuing to expand the Resident Committee and Management would like to seek any expressions of interest from residents to take on the role of administering and keeping the library area in a user-friendly manner. If there are any budding Librarian’s keen to put their hand up to assist in this regard, please speak to Les your RC President or let Village Management know of your interest. Thank you Dawn for donating a new book case to the Library.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Overheard during carpet bowls in the Clubhouse “She prefers the old bowls. She just does. They better than these new unaged ones”.
